How to get to Queen Elizabeth national park

Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of the famous wildlife destinations in Uganda situated in the western part of the country close to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park lies between Lake Edward and Lake George with the Kazinga Channel known to have many wildlife animals, crocodiles and schools of hippo which lie beneath the waters. The Park can be accessed by use of Road as well as Air which are preferred by the travelers on safari in Uganda.

By Road

Queen Elizabeth National Park can be accessed by use of road which is an affordable option. The park is ideally 375–425 kms from Kampala embarking on a journey of 6–8 hours depending on the route and road conditions. Road transport is the most famous way to reach the park as you enjoy scenic views of the countryside, towns, and landscapes.

Main Road Routes

1. Kampala – Masaka – Mbarara – Bushenyi – Kasese Route

This is the most commonly used route for travelers taking a distance of about 420 kms covering a distance of 6–7 hours starting from Kampala or Entebbe to the Southwest via Masaka along the Kampala–Masaka highway. You shall continue to Mbarara via Bushenyi and tea plantations. You shall then proceed to Kasese along tarmac (paved) and a relatively smooth road until you reach park.

Attractions to see En-route

Along the way, you shall watch the Uganda Equator Monument, Lake Mburo National Park, Tea plantations around Bushenyi, Local craft markets and restaurants.
These stops make the journey part of the safari experience.

Kampala – Mubende – Fort Portal – Kasese Route

This is the northern approach to the park taking a distance of about 410 kms for a period of 6–7 hours. You shall leave Kampala and head west through Mubende then Fort Portal passing via Kasese till you reach the Park. En-route, you shall watch Mount Rwenzori and terrain verdant landscapes.

By Air

Queen Elizabeth National Park can be accessed by use of Air as you fly from Entebbe or kajjansi Airstrip where you depart from to the Kihihi Airstrip where you leave from to transfer to the Park. The flights take a period of 1 to 1.5 hours. You shall embark on 30 to 60 minutes’ drive to the lodges or park gate.

Using Public Transport

Budget travelers can also reach the park using buses and taxis. You shall take a bus from Kampala to Kasese or Bushenyi and embark on journey that takes a period of 7 to 9 hours depending on the brief stops. These vehicles will take you to the park entrances or lodge despite the fact that buses do not enter the park itself, so extra transport means are necessary.

Most safari tourists choose guided safari vehicles with 4WD because park roads are rough and muddy during rainy seasons.
