Chimpanzee Trekking in Queen Elizabeth National Park

Chimpanzee trekking in Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of Uganda’s most exciting primate trekking experiences as it offers you a chance to trek and watch the rare species of Chimpanzees in their natural forest habitat. The chimpanzee trekking adventure takes place in Kyambura Gorge which is located close to the Park as well as Kalinzu Forest near the vast park.

Kyambura Gorge also referred to as the Valley of Apes includes a beautiful forested ravine carved by Kyambura River which is 100 meters deep stretching across the Savannah. The Gorge has verdant tropical forest with open plains and a home to many communities of Chimpanzees. Chimpanzee Trekking is the most famous adventure carried out and offers you a chance to trek and explore the rare Chimpanzees in their habitat. While in the Gorge, you shall watch the chimpanzees feeding, grooming, playing, socializing.

Chimpanzee Trekking Experience

Chimpanzee Trekking Experience involves transferring to the park headquarters for short briefing on the conduct around the chimpanzees then later, the ranger will locate you into groups of 8 with lead park guides who shall lead you into the green forest to trek the chimpanzees. You shall follow varying trails in the forest for a period of 2 to 4 hours watching the green terrain, bird species and wildlife species. After a while, you shall meet the Chimpanzees and stay in their presence taking many photos to keep. After trekking the chimpanzees, you shall transfer back to the headquarters to pick your trekking certificate to keep with you.

Cost of Chimpanzee Trekking Permits

Chimpanzee Trekking Permits at Kyambura Gorge cost US $50 USD per person and these are offered at the Uganda Wildlife Authority. These exclude park entrance fees.

Rules and Safety Guidelines

  • Keep a distance of 7–10 meters away from the chimpanzees
  • Do not feed animals
  • Avoid loud noise
  • No flash photography
  • Do not trek if sick
  • Follow ranger instructions at all times.

What to Pack for your chimpanzee Trekking Adventure

While on Chimpanzee Trekking Adventure at Kyambura Gorge, travelers can carry the following essential items to enjoy trekking the chimpanzees in their natural forest vegetation habitat. These Include;

  • Long-sleeved clothing (protection from insects)
  • Hiking boots or gumboots
  • Insect repellent
  • Drinking water
  • Camera (no flash)

Best Time to Visit

Chimpanzee trekking is available all year-round although the Best time to trek the chimpanzees is during the Dry season in the months of (June–Sept, Dec–Feb) as the trails are navigable, photography is clearer as the bushes are not over grown.
